Whirlpool 8182634 Latch for Washer

Direct replacement - broken front loader door latch
We have a Whirlpool Duet GHW9200LW that we bought from Best Buy in June of 2003. Last week the door latch broke - the door would not stay closed but the machine would still run if we held it.

An internet search revealed we needed part AP3837611 which appears to have been replaced with this newer part number. Both parts were marked with Made in Germany and EMZ

Both the old and new parts look almost identical and the new part installed without any problems - truly a direct replacement

The hardest part of this repair is folding back the rubber bellows that attaches to the drum.

(Make sure you unplugged the washer before starting)

If you look very closely at the rubber bellow - The outer lip where the rubber comes in contact with the plastic window, you will see a wire hoop around the outside. At the bottom (6 o'clock position) there will be a small spring. Spread the ends where it attaches to the spring (the spring won't come...

Didn't need to be replaced after all!
Our Kenmore front load washer stopped working. It gave us an error code "F DL". The book said to replace the door lock switch. I ordered one and today I put it in. It was a very easy install - Unplug the machine, accept help from a three year old and a six year old (child labor optional),remove the spring strap from around the front seal, remove three screws holding the switch assembly in place, unplug three wire harnesses on the switch assembly, and replace the switch assemble. It only took about five or ten minutes.

After it was all back together it still didn't work. Then I noticed the latch (the part that is attached to the door) was loose and could slide left and right. I messed with it for a bit, centered it, tightened the screws holding it in place, shut the door and wonder of wonders the machine worked! The original switch wasn't the problem at all! Try this before you order a part just to be safe. Oh, and don't worry about the part; I'm keeping it. I figure it was...

Whirlpool Duet Replacement
After our Whirlpool Duet went for a wild ride in the laundry room the door popped open while it was in cycle. We were unable to reset the door latch in the locked position. We tried everything and looked online for help. Don't bother trying to fix it. Just get a new one. It's very easy to take the old one out and install the new one. A word of advice ... front loaders like the Duet gradually loose their stability. Try not to overload your wash with things like jeans and towels. Anything that soaks up water. And most important ... never leave the house while doing wash!
